Mayor ‘puts Merc before water’: South Africa: News: News24

This is getting ridiculous!  If you read the article, have a look at the related ones as well.

All over the country the mayors of small towns are spending huge amounts of money on their mayoral cars (read company cars), instead of spending the money on necessities for the community.

This abuse of power has got to stop now!

I think the national government needs to step in here and pass legislation as to how much each class of mayor is allowed to spend on a car.  I'm not saying they should not get cars to do their duties, but does the mayor of Pofadder(just an example) really deserve the same type of car as the mayor of Jo'burg or Cape Town?  Hell No!

Run it like a group of companies.  You have your CEO (the president of the country), he's allowed to get the big car with the chaufeur.  Let's say he can spend 1,5 million for example.  His direct reports (cabinet ministers) are allowed to spend 1 million.  This is the "holding company".

Now, all subsidiaries(cities & towns) are allowed to buy cars for their management, but they're not allowed to be worth more than what the holding company's management is driving, and it should also be reflective of the size of company(town) you run.

So, for the big cities, the companies that contribute most to the holding company, the management can splash a bit, and lets say spend 600K-750K.  There are only 6 or 7 of these.  Then the price comes down as the size of the town comes down.  So that the mayor of a small rural town in Mpumalanga(once again an example), is only allowed to get a Toyota Corolla or something similarly priced.  That is more in line with the amount of responsibility you have.

This system works well, and is understood well in the business world, it is time our government wakes up to the fact.  When you are ellected to office, it is first and foremost to serve the community, if you do it well, they will reward you, it is not to serve your own interests, and abuse your newfound power.

The world is my dustbin

What is it with South African drivers and their need to hear glass break on tar wherever they go?  In the last 3 years the amount of borken glass on our roads has gotten much worse, and the other worrying fact is that it is mostly alcohol bottles being broken on the roads.  A lot of green glass, and often you can still see the labels stuck to parts as well.

I'm getting quite sick of this, because of the amount of time I spent on the road on a bicycle, I have to keep on dodging glass, sometimes in the face of oncoming traffic.  Unfortunately bicycle tyres have a similar price to car tyres, and I cannot afford to keep on replacing them on a too regular basis so I have to dodge the glass.

It also seems that most South Africans think that our beautiful country is one big dustbin, no need to walk to the nearest bin to dump rubbish, just drop it where you want.

All of us are directly or indirectly paying for waste management services, why not use it?

You do not see this problem in other countries, because there you would get a severe fine, or even jail time for dumping your rubbish on the street.  These countries have a proper strategy in place.  It's called visible policing, and their cops aren't too lazy to enforce even the simplest of rules, by the book!  Why can't our cops do the same?

IOL: SAAF hit by ‘racial transfer’ row

I think the SANDF is taking things a bit far here.  Government tells them that they have to have a 25/75 percent white/black pilot split, and instead of adding a few black pilots, they go and remove three whites.  And that is not the worst of the move, the spokesperson then goes on to say that they don't want all their best pilots to be fighter pilots, they need some to fly helicopters and transport aircraft.

Wake up!

We want our best pilots to fly the fighter jets, I don't want some incompetent pilot, who battles to fly a transport plane in normal conditions, to have to fly in combat conditions, he won't last seconds against any other force's pilots, because they only use their best.

So now we have the second best pilots, and the second best administrators in place, why not just can the defence force, they won't be able to protect us if they only have second rate staff!

ANCYL

The ANCYL made two very controversial statements this weekend.

They want the Union Buildings renamed, because it "is a symbol of oppression".

Are you retarded or confused?  Here is a quick history lesson.  The Union buildings were built around 1910, as a symbol of the re-integration of the old Transvaal republic into the rest of South Africa (forming a union).  This was after the Boer war against the English, and had absolutely nothing to do with apartheid or oppression!

Stop the mindless renaming of symbols of our history.

"We love Mugabe"

You have answered my question from above, you are retarded.  If you cannot see that Mugabe is pulling his country into the depths of poverty, and that the country is waiting for another revolution to happen, then you are blind or stupid, or probably both.  Maybe you should start thinking about the impact of your comments before making them!  You have just shot the little credibility you had left (maybe there was nothing) in both feet.

Maybe you should go back to what you are supposed to do, uplift the youth of the country and stop trying to play political games.

Taxi drivers

This morning on the news they had interviewed a few taxi drivers that claim their bad driving is due to taxi owners putting pressure on the driver to make more money.  Now in my opinion, if that is the case then start nailing the owners.

The law should be changed that if you are caught endangering the lives of your passengers in any vehicle where a PDP license is required, then the vehicle is confiscated.  In other words, if you’re skipping robots, and speeding unnecessary, and hurtling down the bus-lane/emergency lane, or driving into oncoming traffic, then you lose your taxi.  Easy as that.

After the situation on Friday, where a taxi driver, driving in the emergency lane, wouldn’t give someone in the turning lane space to make his turn, and the whole thing ending in a fist fight, it looks like the public is getting progressively fed-up with the way taxi drivers are driving, and getting away with it.

I want to see some action by the cops, not the lazy sucker hiding behind his speeding radar, and then not focusing on any taxis because they just don’t pay fines, but rather catching the people that look like they can afford the fine.

I want to see action where the cops actually pull people over for skipping red lights.  It has gotten so bad on early morning cycles, that I’m slowing down for green traffic lights, because chances are pretty good that someone will be skipping the red light.

Or pulling vehicles over that are clearly overloaded or unroadworthy.  Or for various other transgressions.

But they are clearly too lazy to do that.  I’ve been pulled over twice recently where once my license had expired (I don’t always have the time to go stand in line for a license, and the one time when I was there they wouldn’t give it to me, because another car that’s on my name, that hasn’t seen the road in two years, had an expired license).  I was honestly trying to do the right thing, but they would not listen to that reasoning.  The second time I was pulled over for a broken front number plate.

And both times they were hinting for bribes, but when it dawned on them, that I meant it when I told them, in the nicest possible way, to go to hell and give me the fine, they let me go.  Both times.  Too lazy to write out a single page form!

I miss the old days, when cops were still proud to be cops, and actually did it properly.

When will it stop

It seems that crime in this country has stepped up to a new level of violence.  The gangs doing cash-in-transit heists don't hesitate to shoot in public places anymore, and when they get the chance they try to kill the security personnel in the vehicle as well.  I suppose that is to ensure that they don't get identified later on.

I think it is time that we challenge government, on a local and national level to stop riding the gravy train, and start doing something about this.

It seems that all they are doing is changing names of places, because of arbitrary events that happened there.  Get real, I don't mind my tax money being spent, but not like that.  Rather use the money that you have allocated for name changes to enable the police to more effectively fight crime, and to alleviate the needs of the homeless.

Once all of that has been done, and the crime rate has significantly dropped, then by all means commemorate the death of your great-grandfather's horse by changing the name of a town you've never been to.

Hitting kids ‘will be criminal’

So now the government is trying to tell me that the bible is incorrect, and they're trying to criminalise corporal punishment.

I am a firm believer in corporal punishment for kids, I grew up with it, and am a better person because of it.  No I do not agree with a parent hitting a child in anger, but kids need discipline, and the best method is still corporal punishment, when applied right.
