This is the reason why we will not get rid of corruption at government level. These guys are very protective over their extra income…
Type inference, don’t get bitten by var
I've been playing with some of the new features in C#, one of which being the var keyword. Which is not dynamic typing, it is just type inference. Meaning that the compiler will be assigning the type based on the value that you initialise the variable with when declaring it. And you have to initialise it with an actual value when using var.
After playing a bit, I discovered this little problem, which is probably just an incorrect assumption from my side, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that will make this assumption. If you look at this code sample.
A disconnected state
Over the last few years, I've been reading a lot of blogs. So far so, that it has become my main source of information for most things.
Recently I've come to realise that I'm reading in a disconnected state. No, I'm not talking about my connection to the net at the time of reading.
Our shocking school system
The matric pass rates have just been released, and once again they are down. 62.7% passed matric (the passed used here is a bit of a farce as described later). And only 10% managed to get over 50% for maths.
This is the first group of matrics that have had Outcome Based Education from their first year in school, and it does not look like this system is working.
Photo Effects
I recently bought a new camera, after not quite getting the quality pictures I wanted from the Canon S50. The S50 is a top-end digital camera, but does not nearly get to the standard of even the basic DSLRs. Initially I was looking at the Canon 450, but found a really good deal on the 40D, which is miles better than the 450, with some professional photographers saying that the image quality is very close to the 5D.
Belated photos of Abby
Since deciding to move my content from FB to here, I have not had chance to do a lot. At 22 weeks into the pregnancy we went for the 4D scan (most people try to correct me into saying it is a 3D scan, but you keep on forgetting the time dimension. The snapshots are 3D, but you get video with Time-lapse, that is why it is called 4D)
Anyway, here are the first photos of our daughter's face, belatedly here, but up on FB for some time.
Exchange server stops working
I wrote a quick post on the fun I've had with an Exchange server that stopped working for no apparent reason. The full article can be found here.
